William Milberg

William Milberg is Professor and Chair, Department of Economics at the New School for Social Research in New York. He serves as a Faculty Research Fellow at the New School’s Schwartz Center for Economic and Policy Analysis. His research focuses on:

  • Globalized production and income distribution
  • Industrial upgrading and economic development
  • Corporate governance and value chain governance
  • Gendered effects of international trade and economic growth
  • The history and methodology of economics
  • Post Keynesian economics

He has worked as a consultant to a number of UN organizations, including the UNDP, UNCTAD, the World Bank and the ILO. He is the co-author (with Robert Heilbroner) of The Crisis of Vision in Modern Economic Thought and The Making of Economic Society and editor of Labor and the Globalization of Production: Causes and Consequences of Industrial Upgrading and The Megacorp and Oligopoly: Essays in Memory of Alfred Eichner. His recent articles appear in The Cambridge Journal of Economics, The Journal of Institutional Economics, and the International Review of Applied Economics. He currently serves on the Research Coordinating Committee of the project “Capturing the Gains from Globalization,” based at the University of Manchester.
He received his Ph.D. in economics from Rutgers University in 1987 and his B.A. in economics and french from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979.
