Antonio Andreoni

Antonio Andreoni is lecturer in economics at the SOAS Department of Economics, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is co-founder and coordinator of the Babbage Industrial Policy Network, an international forum bringing together experts from economics, engineering and operations management with a shared interest in modern manufacturing systems and industrial policy. He is also Research Fellow at the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge; Member of the IPD Task Force on Industrial Policy at Columbia University; Elected member of the Global Young Academy (2014-18) and Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge. In 2015 he will be Visiting Research Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam, Germany. His research will focus on public goods production, technology and policies and, in particular, on the interface between technological and financial infrastructures in Germany.

Andreoni holds a BSc in Economics and Finance and MSc in Economics from the University of Bologna (2006) and an MPhil and PhD in Industrial Development from the University of Cambridge (2013) where he worked under the lead of Ha-Joon Chang. Before joining SOAS, he was postdoctoral research associate at the Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering Department Cambridge University (2013-14); Visiting Fellow of the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw); Adjunct Professor of Economic Development, University of Bologna (2011-13) and Adjunct Lecturer at LUISS Guido Carli University, Rome (2014-15).

Andreoni’s research on the political economy of manufacturing development focuses on the structural and institutional transformations of manufacturing systems and on the design, implementation and evaluation of industrial policy. His research aims to bridge and cross-fertilise economics and engineering in order to advance understanding of the complex structures, competences and interdependencies within modern technological, manufacturing and industrial systems. His papers have been published in journals such as the Cambridge Journal of Economics, Oxford Review of Economic Policy, Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, Revue d’Economie Industrielle and Bancaria. Andreoni also co-authored two books on microfinance, financial infrastructures and alternative financial techniques and provided inputs to various flagship publications of national and international organisations such as the UNIDO Industrial Competitiveness Report 2012-3, the UK Future of Manufacturing Report 2013, the ILO World of Work Report 2014 and the UNDP Human Development Report 2015. He received the XIX Fausto Vicarelli National Award by the Italian Economic Society and the XIV Guido Carli Award by the Popular Bank of Spoleto.

Andreoni has done extensive consultancy work for development organisations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the German Development Agency (GIZ) and the UK Government Office for Science. He has also been invited to deliver lectures and present his work in Italy, Germany, Austria, UK, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Chile, China, South Africa, Azerbaijan and Jordan.
