Professor Mariana F. Mazzucato

Mariana Mazzucato is a Professor in Economics at the University of Sussex, where she holds the RM Phillips Chair in Science and Technology Policy. She is Coordinator of a European Commission FP7 project on Finance Innovation and Growth (www.finnov-fp7.eu) and is the Economics Director of the ESRC Innogen Centre (www.genomicsnetwork.ac.uk/innogen/). She is a member of the High Level Economic Policy Expert Group in the EC – i4g (Innovation for Growth). Her research, published in journals and various books, focusses on the relationship between innovation and company growth—at the sectoral level and over the course of the industry life-cycle. In one of her recent works, The Entrepreneurial State (DEMOS, 2011) she argues that active State investment has been the secret behind most radical innovations which have fuelled growth (from IT to biotech and nanotech), and that if Europe wants its own ‘Googles’ it needs more State not less. She is active in the media, and has recently argued that austerity in the Eurozone is killing off the possibility of an innovation-led recovery.
